YES OR NO
The children are given sticks which are coloured red on one side and green on another. Different artworks/design work can be shown that question the concept of what something is, for example book art (extending what a book actually is), painting (paintings that move beyond the concept of what a painting is) etc.
The activity was tested during a workshop in which we would create our own gardens. We started the workshop by looking at examples from contemporary art that work with the concept of the garden, expanding and questioning our understanding of what a 'normal' garden is. While looking at the artworks, the children were invited to hold up the green side of the stick if they believed that this is a garden, and the red side if they thought that it is not. Through the activity, children are encouraged to share the reasons behind their choice.
